significant difference in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator DF508 allele prevalence, the number of patients should be increased dramatically. Hopefully, the worldwide existing large collections of DNA specimens from osteoporotic patients will provide an opportunity to enlighten the possible implication of a cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator mutation in the development of osteoporosis.

Altered surfactant protein A gene expression and protein metabolism associated with repeat exposure to inhaled endotoxin.
Chronically inhaled endotoxin, which is ubiquitous in many occupational and domestic environments, can adversely affect the respiratory system resulting in an inflammatory response and decreased lung function. Surfactant-associated protein A (SP-A) is part of the lung innate immune system and may attenuate the inflammatory response in various types of lung injury. Using a murine model to mimic ...

متن کاملGenetic variability in the development of pulmonary tolerance to inhaled pollutants in inbred mice.
After repeated exposures, many individuals develop tolerance to the adverse health effects of inhaled pollutants. Pulmonary tolerance can be characterized as the ability of the lung to withstand the adverse actions of a toxic compound after repeated exposures. To determine whether genetic background is important to the development of pulmonary tolerance to inhaled pollutants, 11 inbred strains ...
متن کاملInflammatory response after inhalation of bacterial endotoxin assessed by the induced sputum technique.
BACKGROUND Organic dusts may cause inflammation in the airways. This study was performed to assess the usefulness of the induced sputum technique for evaluating the presence of airways inflammation using inhaled endotoxin (lipopolysaccharide) as the inducer of inflammation. METHODS To characterise the inflammatory response after inhalation of endotoxin, 21 healthy subjects inhaled 40 microgra...
متن کاملTolerance induced by chronic inhaled antigen in a murine asthma model is not mediated by endotoxin.
Ovalbumin (OVA)-sensitized wildtype (WT) and endotoxin-resistant (ER) mice developed similar degrees of airways eosinophilia and serum OVA-specific IgE levels after acute aerosolized OVA challenge. WT mice demonstrated methacholine hyperreactivity, whereas ER mice showed no change in responsiveness. With chronic aerosolized OVA challenge, both WT and ER mice developed local tolerance, with reso...
